BSNL set to end the tie-up with VSNL for carrying its ILD calls
August 15, 2005
According to news reports, BSNL is set to end the tie-up with VSNL for carrying its ILD calls. In an attempt to get better commercial terms, it plans to float a multi-million-dollar global tender to set up its own network. The agreement with the successful bidder will be for a two-year period. The new tender will put in place a permanent ILD network for BSNL comprising undersea cable operators and satellite service providers. This could also mean reduced ILD tariffs for consumers. The tender is expected to attract global players such as AT&T, Sprint and MCI. BSNL, with nearly 55 million telephone lines, accounts for ILD traffic worth Rs 40 billion every year.
